Goa has been India's most-loved coastal escape for decades, and the reasons haven't changed: a stretch of Arabian Sea coastline, more than four centuries of Portuguese colonial history layered into its churches and old towns, and a food culture built around fresh seafood and slow-cooked spice. North Goa moves fast — beach clubs, water sports, markets that stay open past midnight. South Goa moves slow — quieter beaches, heritage villages, and resorts built for doing very little. Most good Goa trips deliberately use both.
For a first Goa trip, we recommend 5 days split roughly 3 (North) and 2 (South) — enough time to get the Baga/Calangute energy out of your system before moving somewhere quieter for the last couple of days. Trying to "do" both ends in one rushed loop is the single biggest planning mistake we see.

UPI covers most shacks, taxis and small shops now, but keep some cash for toll booths, smaller villages and vendors without card machines.
North or South Goa first? +
If your flight lands at Dabolim, South Goa is closer; if it lands at Manohar (Mopa), North Goa is closer. Plan your first hotel around your arrival airport to avoid an unnecessary long transfer.

Baga & Calangute Beaches
The classic North Goa beach strip — water sports, shack rows and the busiest nightlife in the state, all within walking distance of each other.
This stretch is where most first-time visitors base themselves. Expect parasailing and jet-ski operators, a dense run of beach shacks, and flea markets on specific nights.
💡 Booking a hotel here expecting a quiet beach holiday is the most common regret — this is Goa's liveliest, most crowded stretch.
Fort Aguada & Sinquerim
A 17th-century Portuguese fort with sweeping Arabian Sea views, right next to one of North Goa's calmer beaches.
The fort's lighthouse and ramparts are a genuinely good sunset spot with far fewer crowds than the main beach strip nearby.
Anjuna & Vagator
The bohemian end of North Goa — flea markets, cliffside cafes and Goa's original trance-party heritage.
Anjuna's Wednesday flea market is a genuine Goa institution; Vagator's red-cliff beaches are some of the most photogenic in the state.
Old Goa & Panaji
UNESCO-listed churches and Goa's Portuguese-era capital, for the history most beach-only trips miss entirely.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral in Old Goa, and the pastel Latin Quarter (Fontainhas) in Panaji, are worth a half-day even on a beach-focused itinerary.
Palolem & South Goa Beaches

Palolem's crescent bay and nearby Agonda and Patnem beaches are considerably less commercialised than the North Goa strip.
