Hip-Hip Holidays

THAILAND VS VIETNAM

Your first international holiday does not have to start with a country.

Thailand and Vietnam can both work beautifully for an Indian traveller's first trip abroad. The more useful question is what kind of holiday you actually want, how much time you have, and how much planning complexity you are comfortable with.

THE REAL DECISION

You're not really choosing between Thailand and Vietnam.

You are choosing between two different styles of international holiday. Both offer beaches, cities, food, culture and a strong tourism network, but the balance between ease, exploration, routing and pace can feel quite different.

Thailand

A relatively straightforward route into international travel, with established tourist infrastructure, beaches and islands, city experiences and strong familiarity for Indian travellers.

Vietnam

A more exploratory mix of cities, landscapes, food, history and regional experiences, where route design becomes a bigger part of the holiday.

AT A GLANCE

What changes when you choose one over the other?

There is no universal winner. The useful comparison is how each destination fits your particular trip.

Wide range, including strong Indian-food availability in tourist areas
Strong regional and street-food culture
Planning complexity
Often lower when using a simple city + beach route
Can increase when combining multiple regions
Best question to ask
Do I want my first trip to feel easy?
Do I want my first trip to feel exploratory?

START WITH YOUR TRIP

How much time do you actually have?

The number of days can change the answer more than a destination ranking ever could. A good first international holiday should leave enough time to enjoy the destination, not just move between it.

4-5 DAYS

Keep the route simple

Fewer hotel changes and sensible transfers matter more. The goal is a holiday, not a checklist of airports and attractions.

6-7 DAYS

Build a fuller experience

You have more room to balance sightseeing and downtime, or combine two complementary experiences without rushing every day.

8+ DAYS

Explore more deliberately

Longer trips make broader regional routing more practical, provided the additional travel actually improves the holiday.

WHO IS TRAVELLING?

The same destination can work very differently for different travellers.

Couples

Balance experiences with downtime. Hotel location, pacing and the amount of moving around can matter as much as the destination itself.

Families

Think about transfers, hotel location, food familiarity, activity mix and whether the children can comfortably handle the pace.

Parents

Accessibility, transfer duration, hotel changes and sensible daily pacing become more important than squeezing in every attraction.

Friends

Activities, nightlife, food, room configuration and group logistics may influence the right route.

TOTAL TRIP COST

Don't compare countries using hotel prices alone.

A destination that looks cheaper on a daily-cost comparison can change once flights, routing, hotel changes, transfers and activities are included. Your total holiday cost is the useful number.

✓ Flights
✓ Accommodation
✓ Entry or visa requirements
✓ Airport and intercity transfers
✓ Food and daily spending
✓ Activities and experiences
✓ Travel insurance
✓ Connectivity and contingency

Indicative costs vary materially by departure city, travel month, hotel category, exchange rates and itinerary. We therefore do not present one universal Thailand-versus-Vietnam budget as a fact.

PRACTICAL PREPARATION

Entry rules matter, but they are only one part of the decision.

Visa and entry rules can change. Treat the following as a dated snapshot, not a permanent promise.

THAILAND

30-day visa exemption currently applies

The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi states that the 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passport holders entering Thailand for tourism took effect on 15 September 2026 and remains effective until further announcement.

Important: Entry requirements can change. Verify the current official rules for your passport, travel dates and purpose of travel before booking non-refundable arrangements.

YOUR FIT

Which direction sounds more like your trip?

These are fit signals, not a ranking. Your dates, departure city, group and priorities can change the answer.

You may lean towards Thailand if...

  • • This is your first international trip and you want relatively low planning friction.
  • • Beaches, islands and a city experience are high on your list.
  • • You have limited days and want a simple route.
  • • Familiar food and established tourist infrastructure would make you more comfortable.

You may lean towards Vietnam if...

  • • Culture, scenery and food exploration matter as much as downtime.
  • • You are comfortable with a little more route planning.
  • • You have enough days to make a broader itinerary worthwhile.
  • • You want the journey between different regions to be part of the experience.

Still not sure?

That's exactly where personalised planning helps. The right answer depends on your dates, departure city, group, budget and what you want to feel when you come back.
